We’re just getting into the swing of things with Warhammer 40,000’s 9th Edition, and Games Workshop are constantly making new waves of announcements to build off what they started with the Indomitus box. With the Warhammer 40K core rules and the main rulebook now out in the wild, our attention turns to the codices and other rules supplements.

Whether they're main faction books for army-specific supplements, releasing the dedicated tomes for each of Warhammer 40K's iconic armies will be next on Games Workshop's priority list, and what 40K fans will want to see next. With so many to get through though, it will be interesting to see what the order of release will be.

At the time of writing, onlyCodex: Necrons and Codex: Space Marines have been released so far, with other books announced and coming soon. We'll update this story as more announcements come out. It's wort noting that all of the below books will come with a code on the inside back cover that will allow you to unlock a digital version of the codex from within the new 40K app that was released alongside the 9th edition.

Free Core Rules. The Warhammer 40,000 Core Rules shows you how to move, shoot, charge and fight with your units on the battlefield. These represent the backbone of how the game is played, and once you have mastered them, you can use all the additional rules found in the Warhammer 40,000 Core Book to take your game even further. Following the 1987 initial release of Games Workshop's Warhammer 40,000 wargame, set in a far future science fantasy universe, the company began publishing background literature that expands previous material, adds new material, and describes the universe, its characters, and its events in detail. Since 1997 the bulk of background literature has been published by the affiliated imprint Black. Tools for the tool god. Codex: Space Marines contains lots of lore for the first-founding chapters, as well as their more prominent successors. It is 208 pages in length with 98 datasheets for new and existing units. That's.. well, it seems like a lot of datasheets, especially if you take into account all of the supplements you're likely to get as well.

The new codex has also consolidated many of the most popular new rules that appeared in various Psychic Awakening books. It has dedicated sections for Wargear, a specific points-value list at the end, Army-specific rules and new Crusades content.

It is available to order right now as the book was released on October 10th, 2020. There is also a special Collector's Edition available, if you fancy it.

Codex: Necrons Release Date

This is a smaller book than the Space Marines release, clocking in at only 120 pages. It will still be packed with new lore and will generally overhaul of how the Necron army works in battle, however.

There are 51 data sheets, including rules for the Silent King himself, as we Army specific rules, Crusade content and other nuts and bolts as with all codices. The Necrons specifically will have access to new ‘Command Protocols’ will reward army building along the newly fleshed out 'dynastic' lines, and will add in a touch of unpredictability to the round-by-round flow of a battle.

It is available to order right now, as the book was released on October 10th, 2020. There is also a special Collector's Edition available, if you fancy it.

Codex Supplement: Space Wolves Release Date

The Space Wolves codex supplement provides additional army-specific datasheets, rules, and bespoke Crusades content for the Space Wolves faction. It's 88 pages long, and will feature additional lore for the faction, as well as a bestiary and 'Sagas' rules, which is a unique form of Warlord traits.

It is available to order now, and was available for pre-order from Saturday, October 31st 2020.

Codex Supplement: Deathwatch Release Date

The Deathwatch codex supplement provides additional army-specific datasheets, rules, and bespoke Crusades content for this sub-faction. It is 64 pages long, and will include additional lore for the faction, as well as the usual bespoke content; including rules for mixing Kill Teams with different specialisations.

This has been available to order since Saturday, October 31st 2020.

Imperial Armour Compendium

This is a stand-alone book release from Forge World to bring in-line a number of their special/limited edition miniatures with 9th Edition. It will feature 233 updated datasheets for Forge World models released for Warhammer 40,000. It also includes a Regimental Doctrine for the Death Korps of Krieg and suggested Successor Tactics for five renowned Chapters.

As a side-note, Games Workshop have said that any model that does currently exist but that doesn't have an entry in this book, will later be receiving a Warhammer Legends update at some point. This book has been available to order since Friday, October 30th 2020.

Codex Supplement: Blood Angels Release Date

The Blood Angels codex supplement will provide additional army-specific datasheets, rules, and bespoke Crusades content for this faction. It will also come with additional lore and background information on this popular chapter.

This book is now available for pre-order and will released on December 5th, 2020. You can also buy a special collector's edition as well if you want.

Codex Supplement: Death Guard Release Date

The Death Guard codex supplement, which will be the first dedicated Chaos Space Marines book to release since 9th Edition started rolling out, will be releasing sometime in early 2021. It was originally slated for a December 2020 released but it was delayed for reasons unknown.

Like the others, it's supposed to provide additional army-specific datasheets, rules, and bespoke Crusades content for the Death Guard faction, but we can't help but wonder if it will do anything more. After all, this supplement will have to do most of the heavy lifting for Chaos players in lieu of a new dedicated faction book.

Codex: Drukhari Release Date

The first Xenos codex release has been revealed to be the Drukhari; or 'Dark Eldar' if you remember their non-copyrightable original name.

According to the preview article, the new codex can be summarised as offering 'more attacks, higher damage, and lethal combat output across the board.'

/vmware-change-disk-serial-number.html. This book will also come with plenty of lore, new & updated datasheets, as well as Crusades content.

At the time of writing, it's still expected to release sometime in January 2021. As with the Dark Angel book below, we should hear more about a pre-order date about a week or so before pre-purchases are due to go live.

Codex Supplement: Dark Angels Release Date

The Dark Angels supplement - the fourth such Space Marine Chapter supplement to have been announced so far - has recently been given a preview revealing some more details as to what it will entail.

As well as the expected lore, datasheets and bespoke crusades content, the supplement has been summarised as allowing you to 'launch faster and more deadly Ravenwing assaults, initiate units (including Dreadnoughts!) into the Deathwing, and hunt the fallen with a range of new Stratagems and Relics'.

At the time of writing, it's still expected to release sometime in January 2021.

Warhammer 40K 9th Edition Codex Books

At the time of writing, no further Codex or Codex supplements have been announced, however since you're here you might be interested in knowing that two further narrative books are coming:

  • War Zone Charadon Act 1: The Book of Rust - a campaign book that will also include new rules for the Death Guard, Adeptus Mechanicus, Imperial Knights, and Drukhari.
  • Plague Purge Mission Pack - similar to Beyond the Veil, this offers bespoke Crusades content in the form of background lore and new missions for the Charadon war zone.

We'll keep you updated as more information is released.

'Stories may meander, but they all end the same. I have seen the authors. They are terrible.'

– Magnus the Red

The Black Library is the book publishing arm of Games Workshop, responsible for releasing fiction set in the Warhammer Fantasy and Warhammer 40,000 universes (and, until FFG took over, the corresponding RPGs). It shares its name with the Black Library within the 40K setting, which has more to do with forbidden Eldar lore than dodgy novels. The quality of BL output tends to be quite variable; they've put out many books worth reading (such as those that give us a glimpse into backstories-HH books, for example) but also many that are quite terrible (eg something that is supposed to be a major event for the characters but is otherwise ignored).

Is this Canon?[edit]

While the Black Library has published good books from good authors, some works are of dubious adherence to canon. There exists a certain controversy among the readers as to whether the works of BL can be considered canon, and its employees are not helping the case, either. Marc Gascoigne, former publisher and editor for the Black Library says on the matter:

'Keep in mind Warhammer and Warhammer 40,000 are worlds where half truths, lies, propaganda, politics, legends and myths exist. The absolute truth which is implied when you talk about 'canonical background' will never be known because of this. Everything we know about these worlds is from the viewpoints of people in them which are as a result incomplete and even sometimes incorrect. The truth is mutable, debatable and lost as the victors write the history..
Here's our standard line: Yes it's all official, but remember that we're reporting back from a time where stories aren't always true, or at least 100% accurate. If it has the 40K logo on it, it exists in the 40K universe. Or it was a legend that may well have happened. Or a rumour that may or may not have any truth behind it.
Let's put it another way: anything with a 40K logo on it is as official as any Codex.. and at least as crammed full of rumours, distorted legends and half-truths.'

George Mann, the current head of the Black Library, has elaborated further in interviews:

'In further conversation, George emphasized that Black Library’s main objective was to 'tell good stories'. He agreed that some points in certain novels could, perhaps, have benefited from the editor’s red pen (a certain multilaser was mentioned) but was at pains to explain that, just as each hobbyist tends to interpret the background and facts of the Warhammer and 40K worlds differently, so does each author. In essence, each author represents an “alternative” version of the respective worlds. After pressing him further, he explained that only the Studio material (rulebooks, codices, army books and suchlike) was canonical in that it HAD to be adhered-to in the plots and background of the novels. There was no obligation on authors to adhere to facts and events as spelled out in Black Library work.'

They have a regular submissions window so you can submit your fanfiction work and get a job as a freelance writer. Like any business, they prefer to hire staff with an established track record, so the commissions tend to go to existing tie-in writers or ex-GW staff, but anyone can apply for the job. Fa/tg/uys have, as yet, been unsuccessful, leading to hilarious Nerdrage, as they have yet to realise that they will never get the job.

The Quality Issue[edit]

As mentioned above BL books sometimes suffer from a quality issue but this is not doing it justice. Part of the problem is the mix of talent. Some of the writers are experienced and skilled professional novelists. Others are ex-staff members and friends of GW staff who happened to be in the room at the time. Some of them are both.

While some books are either very well written or perfectly decent reads, others are pure trashy slash and burn books to fill your need to read about beheadings or copious amounts of blood and what little plot is present exists just to satisfy your bloodlust.

Such a state may be perplexing at first but you have to understand the BL often releases books in cooperation with GW army releases. There is a new Eldar update? Better bring out a novel about the Eldar then! GW often have a few army updates planned in advance, plently of time get a new novel rolling in time for the army release. Other books are sometimes bought out to satisfy the needs of fans of one of the more popular factions (space marines for example) for a story about their favourite warriors.

BL understands though that there are fans of just the fluff (such as the people that read this wiki) and so demand a little more than just the normal bloods and guts sort of writing. So they bring in competent writers to draft some stories with actual weight and dignity.

A good way to judge the quality of a read is by the author. Dan Abnett, Graham McNeill and Sandy Mitchell occupy the leading pantheon of great 40k writers and you'd be hard pressed to find anything by them to be half baked. Well, your mileage may vary on McNeill's more recent work. John French, Aaron Dembski-Bowden, Guy Haley and Christ Wraight have ascended to the pantheon in recent years, though AD-B can be very polarising around these parts.

At the other end of the scale you've got C.S.Goto, who writes very compelling toilet paper.

In Warhammer 40,000[edit]

Warhammer 40k Pdf Novels

In-universe, the Black Library is the repository of the Eldar Empire's collected knowledge of Chaos. It is guarded by the Harlequins and White Seers and is hidden in the Webway, because that knowledge could be used for great heresy, although now and then, the Harlequins let someone check out a book if it is important that they know something. The only people the Harlequins will allow to enter the Black Library are those who have 'conquered the Chaos within them' and have the requisite membership and card, so the list of non-Harlequin members is predictably minuscule. Ahriman has attempted to enter the Library for some time now; unfortunately, he has yet to succeed and stir some shit up. Eldrad keeps denying his library membership application.

Doesn't seem to be guarded that closely, since Inquisitor Jaq Draco could just walk in, steal the Eldar's book of Prophecies and walk away with it.The Harlequins let him in. He just didn't know it then boasted everywhere about it. Listen, you can't just walk into the library in the bad part of town and then parade around saying you've been to the 'black library.' You'll get shot for being a white supremacist, and a stupid one at that.

List of Black Library writers[edit]

In no particular order, for very obvious reasons, just ignore the fact that the top 3 write some of the best (Gaunt's Ghosts, various, Ciaphas Cain). Note that some of these authors are not employed at BL any more.
