D'Angelico has perfected the art of the hollowbody electric guitar, but it is equally well know for its line of acoustic and bass guitars as well as the Master Builder custom series. You can find plenty of used and new D'Angelico guitars here on Reverb. I have a EX-SS 2015 made in Korea. Great guitar, great build. Lots of bang for the buck! I was looking at the same model but with a stopbar. The serial number is S160063543. The D’Angelico Premier Series consists of nine different models that include various semi-hollow and solidbody guitars as well as a true hollowbody. We took a look at a single-cutaway, semi-hollow Premier SS (PSFBSSSP) and a double-cutaway, semi-hollow Premier DC (PSDCSP) to see how they compare to previous D’Angelico models we know and love. D'Angelico had filled many orders from jazz guitar's most accomplished players. With this interaction, John was able to build into his instruments, the construction necessary to stay current with the arch-tops ever expanding role in the orchestral setting. John D'Angelico constructed some of the finest arch-top guitars ever made. Serial Numbers 1932 to 1964. D'Angelico serial numbers are not strictly chronological. Some overlaps in date ranges occur. Notes: In the handwritten ledgers of John D'Angelico, the luthierrecorded his output of instruments each with its serial number, date ofcompletion and purchaser. While most of his creations were sold directlyto individual customers, a small number of guitars were commissioned byretailers like Gravois Music and Silver and Horlund. Three of D'Angelico'searliest instruments share an particularly intriguing designation. Builtover a seven month period between November 1933 and May of 1934, they arenoted in the builder's hand as produced for a single notable customer: Selmer.
Best known for their superlative woodwinds, the Selmer name is renownedamong guitarists for the distinctive acoustic jazz guitars made famous byDjango Reinhardt and his followers. Barely a year after Selmer Paris producedthe first of the Maccaferri design guitars in 1932, Selmer New York apparentlycontracted with John D'Angelico for a similar venture: to produce a numberof archtop guitars under their prestigious name. For whatever reason, thearrangement was short-lived, and only three instruments were produced underthe partnership. The whereabouts of the first two Selmer D'Angelicos remainsunknown to us at this time. The third and final example, #1062, is presentedhere.
D'Angelico's earliest guitars were modeled closely after the originalGibson L-5, the first commercially successful archtop guitar. The SelmerD'Angelico is squarely in the mold of those first guitars, with a 16 1/2'parallel braced body, tapered 'snakehead' headstock, block inlaid ebonyfingerboard with pointed finial, adjustable ebony bridge and gold trapezetailpiece. Even the multi-bound pickguard echoed the sinewy contour of theearly L-5 scratchplate. The graceful 'vine-and-torch' pegheadinlay and arched pearl block peghead logo is seen on a number of the earliestD'Angelicos, including #1002 as pictured in the Schmidt book, and othersshown in Gruhn and Carter and Tsumura. Indeed, the most significant differencebetween this Selmer and D'Angelico's standard archtop of the day would appearto be the engraved gothic script logo. Documentation from Mandolin Brothers, who last sold this instrument almosta decade ago, suggests the guitar was returned to D'Angelico and fittedby the maker with a cutaway, at which time the binding and finish wouldhave been replaced as well. It appears likely that the original pickguardmay have been recontoured and rebound at that time, and the medium jumbofret wire, still retaining its nibs at the binding, suggests to us thatthe work was done sometime late in D'Angelico's career. A gold Guild-logoDeArmond Model 1000 Rhythm Chief was installed, with a pickguard-mountedvolume control and 1/8' mini-jack connector. Finally, an elegant setof period-correct antique gold 16 X1 butterbean tuners has been recentlyfitted to the headstock.
The soundboard is carved of extraordinary tonewood, with grain so tightat the centerseam as to approach invisibility. The back and neck in turnare shaped from wonderfully bookmatched tiger flame maple, arrayed in adramatic chevron pattern. On the back, the maker's original registrationdots may be seen near the heel and endblock, and a single short grainlinecrack has been immaculately resealed near the cutaway. The binding is tightto the body and in excellent condition, and apart from a few random scratchesnear the guard and some old thumbwear, the finish is remarkably free ofwear. The neck profile is a smooth gentle D, surprisingly contemporary inprofile, and the fingerboard is straight with excellent fretwork. In a signaturetouch, D'Angelico drilled out the underside of the bridge base to lightenits mass and increase resonance. The voice is notable for its clarity andmusicality, with an elegance and refinement throughout the tonal register,all of which is warmly conveyed by the vintage DeArmond pickup.
Sixteen inch cutaways have experienced a remarkable popularity in recentyears, and this body size is one of the rarest among vintage D'Angelicos.The guitar is supplied with a copy of its entry in D'Angelico's hand-writtenledger. A singular opportunity to acquire one of the rarest and most distinctiveguitars of the 20th century.
Setup: The frets have been precision leveled, recrowned and polishedas necessary; bridge height adjusted; bridge compensation set; string slotsat nut and bridge inspected; bridge foot contour inspected; bridge radiusinspected; bridgewheels and tuners lubricated; fingerboard and bridge oiled;body and neck cleaned and hand polished.
This instrument is strung with medium gauge nickel roundwound strings(.013-.057). The guitar will accommodate lighter or heavier gauge strings,according to preference. String action is set at 5/64' to 6/64'at the 12th fret, with moderate relief for acoustic playing with mediumstrings. The action may be lowered or raised to your requirements with theadjustable bridge.
